Violence erupted in different parts of the country after former prime minister Khaleda Zia called a nationwide transport blockade on 05 January, the first anniversary of a controversial election that her Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and allies boycotted. According to official estimates, at least 35 people have since been killed in firebomb attacks on passenger buses, cars and trucks as vehicles plied on highways in defiance of the blockade.

Fire debris

Anlong Pi, an eight-hectare dump site situated close to the famous Cambodian resort province of Siem Reap, has recently become a tourist attraction in its own right. Sightseers pose for pictures with children who scavenge scraps for a living, making between $0.25 and $2 per day, according to a representative of a company overseeing the waste. Michelle Obama is due to visit to Cambodia to promote Let Girls Learn, a worldwide initiative that aims to help adolescent girls attend school.
